Here are just a few ways to get started...
Run For Office!
Many Rhode Island cities and towns present an excellent opportunity for Greens to successfully run for elective office. Many local communities elect more than one of either their town councilors, school committee members, or both in at-large, multi-member races — town-wide, and with the top “x” vote-getters out of all the candidates winning (in some towns it's 3, most others 5). These are the types of elections that Green candidates are (historically) the most likely to win. They are the types of races where we can build a significant infrastructure for the party. And they are the types of offices — dealing with nuts and bolts issues of land use, economic development, and community-building — where Green values can have the most direct and immediate impact on people's lives.
Here's an example: The Charlestown Town Council elects 5 members every 2 years. In 2008, 9 candidates ran for those 5 offices. The top 3 vote-getters were all independents (number 4 and 5 were Republicans). No candidate received more than 15.3% of the vote, and the 5th-place candidate got 14.2%. Meaning that anyone who got at least 14% of the vote won their election. Compare this with the terrific efforts of Jeff Toste, who ran for state Senate three times in a single-member district, came in second with roughly 30% every time, but didn't win a single race. There are dozens of races state-wide that we can win.
Winning seats on town councils and school committees is the first step on the path to becoming the true alternative in this state to the Republicrats (and the Moderates, who, while laudable for their efforts to advance the causes of third parties in the state, are basically the same as the other two, just with less history). Winning races will help us build the party into a real movement, toward real health care reform (not fake health insurance reform), real sustainable economic development (not fake economic “growth”) and real long-term resource stewardship (not short-term exploitation).
