Most of Plains, Georgia is now the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site operated by the National Park Service. The site includes the restored Plains High School where both Jimmy and Rosalynn attended, today the official state high school of Georgia and a Museum that tells the story of Carter's rise to national prominence and the story of the town of Plains as it faced the Great Depression and coped with the changing social issues of the times.
Andersonville National Historic Site commemorates those who gave their lives during the Civil War as well as veterans of later wars. It is also the home of the National P.O.W. Museum. In April, 1998 Andersonville National Historic Site, operated by the National Park Service, opened the National Prisoner of War Museum. The museum is the culmination of over ten years of work and dedication on the part of American former POWs and tells vividly the story of their sacrifices for our nation. Here present and future generations can learn that freedom is hard won and long fought for by those who came before.
