Campaign 2000:
How to Cast a Write-in Vote In Your County

Different Counties Require Different Write-in Procedures

This page lists the different methods used to write in candidates on the ballots used by Georgia counties. For information on the wording to be used to write in candidates please see How to Cast a Write-in Vote.

Please note that there are several voting machines/methods in use in Georgia. We have listed the methods used in each county, identified by a two-letter code. Find your county in the list below, then read the instructions further down the page for that voting method. You can print this page and take it with you. Also remember that each voting location is required to have someone on hand that can help you cast your write-in vote. If you're unsure about how to do it once you get to the polls, be sure to ask for help, because doing the least thing wrong can cause your ballot to be considered invalid.

To write-in a candidate on a voting machine (VM):

1. Pull the levers for all the regular candidates for whom you wish to vote.
This will prevent you from locking out any races.

2. At the top left-hand corner of the machine is a silver button,
below which is a column of sliding covers over the list of the candidates on the ballot for each office.

3. Press this button and slide open the covers for the race for which you wish to write in a candidate. There is a number by the office for which you wish to write in a candidate's name that refers you to the correct metal door slot to use. Only the designated slot will count as a vote. Any other slot used will not be counted. Sliding open the slot's cover will expose the paper on which you write the candidate's name. The wording used must exactly match the wording approved by the Secretary Of State, which can be found here. You must press the silver button each time you wish to open another slot.

4. Close the voting machine once you're done and it will register the write-in vote.

To write in a candidate on OPTECH Optical Scan Ballots (OS2):

(This is the easiest ballot on which to do a write-in because the ballot is filled out in pencil)
There is a line below the list of regular candidates that is labeled for write-in candidates.
You write in the name of the candidate and the office. There are arrows to connect the candidate's name on the OPTECH devices.

To write in a candidate on Non-OPTECH Optical Scan Ballots (OS):

(This is the easiest ballot on which to do a write-in because the ballot is filled out in pencil)
There is a line below the list of regular candidates that is labeled for write-in candidates.
You write in the name of the candidate and the office.

To write in a candidate on Vote Recorder Ballots (VR):

This uses punch cards.
On each ballot card there are two stubs.
The poll booth worker tears off one stub before you deposit your ballot card.
The other stub has a series of line on it.
On these lines, you write BOTH the name of the candidate and the office for which they are running.

To write in a candidate on Paper Ballots (PB):

Use the lines provided under the list of candidates for each office.

It's Your Right!

If you encounter any trouble exercising this right, please don't hesitate to call. If you can commit time on and immediately after election day, please consider serving as a poll watcher. We need your help to protect the rights of voters to cast a ballot for their candidates of choice.

You may call the Georgia Green Party at 770-635-3496.
